Midland Red (Express) Ltd was formed on 6th September 1981 when the Midland Red was split into six separate companies. Midland Red (Express) Ltd took over virtually all of the Midland Red coaching interests and was based at Digbeth Coach Station in Birmingham. The Company was a major operator of National Express and National Holiday services. The company was renamed Midland Red Coaches Ltd in May 1985. The staff and management of Midland Red Coaches and Midland Red West successfully made joint bid to to purchase the two companies from National Bus on 22nd December 1986. During the early 1990’s Midland Red Coaches stopped operating National Express services and concentrated on private hire, contract, excursions and holiday work and the whole fleet was painted in a new red livery. The Coaching unit was finally closed on 25th January 1997. Some of the coaches are still in the fleet of First Midland Red and are now used mainly on bus work.
